New lay associates welcome others to Cistercian Spirituality Retreat at monastery
Sept. 10-12, 2010
Oblates of St. Benedict, the first ecumenical lay associates of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, are inviting others to join them for a Cistercian Spirituality Retreat Sept. 10-12 at the monastery.
“Spiritual formation and direction come by way of our daily practices,” says Michael Thompson, a member of the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, Atlanta, who is inviting other Episcopalians to “share with us the practice of a contemplative life.”
Five members of the group’s founding council, which has been meeting monthly since January, are from parishes in the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta. Along with Thompson, they are Brian Freese, Emmanuel Church, Athens; Jim Lynn and Nancy Armstrong, St. Patrick’s, Atlanta; and Davina Henderson, St. Teresa’s, Acworth.
Episcopalians Michael Thompson, Brian Freese, Jim Lynn, Davina Henderson and Nancy Armstrong, along with Kim Jenne, a student at Candler School of Theology, at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit, Conyers.
“This gift of formal affiliation with the monastery has provided a spiritual well from which to draw, and it is available to any Christian interested in practicing a way of life with the Rule of St. Benedict as our trellis,” Thompson said.
To register for the retreat, go to www.trappist.net and link to the information regarding upcoming retreats.
For more information about Benedictine and Cistercian spirituality or the Rule of St. Benedict, contact Thompson at laytrappist@gmail.com and go to condonati.blogspot.com, which features the sharing of spiritual thoughts and reflections.
