Golf tournament planned to benefit ministry with the homeless

7/7/2010

A benefit golf tournament is planned this fall to raise funds and awareness for the Church of the Common Ground, a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta that provides a haven and a worshipping community for people who are homeless.

The Church of the Common Ground Golf Classic will be Monday, Oct. 4, at The Golfers’ Club at Fort McPherson, southwest of Atlanta.

“We’ve had a wonderful and dedicated group of people seeking to raise some much needed money for our ministry, and they wanted to sponsor a fund-raiser,” said the Rev. Robert Book, who founded the Church of the Common Ground in Atlanta’s downtown. “They learned I’m crazy about golf, so a golf tournament it is!”

Supporters have been meeting weekly since early spring to plan the event.   The tournament will have a scramble format and offer individual as well as team awards. The individual entry fee is $125, which covers green fees, golf cart and lunch.

Hole sponsorships can be purchased for $500 each, and the tournament planning group will be contacting parishes and individuals about sponsorships.

There are various ways to take part. “Folks unable to play may want to sponsor a hole or make a donation,” said Frank Allen, who chairs the event’s planning committee. “They can do that online or with a check through the mail.”

During the week, at rented space at 170 Trinity Ave., Book and his wife, Holly, and a team of lay and ordained ministers offer a foot clinic, an art program, Bible studies, a medical clinic, recovery meetings and movies.

Church of the Common Ground is an outgrowth of Ecclesia Ministries founded in 1994 in Boston and is a recognized worshipping community of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta. For more information, visit the Church of the Common Ground website.
