Youth council chooses to fund well for Haiti

by Steve Bishop

The Youth Council at Holy Trinity Episcopal Parish, Decatur, Ga., has voted to build a well for a village in Haiti.

The Youth Council at Holy Trinity Episcopal Parish, Decatur, helps determine how a portion of the church’s annual budget designated for the Millennium Development Goals will be spent.  After research, discussion and careful consideration, they elected this year to support the Clean Water Project in Haiti.

This initiative, organized by parishioner Ed Buckley in cooperation with the global relief organization Food For the Poor, has brought clean water to over 65,000 people in Port au Prince and Cap Haitien.  One well costs about $4,000 and serves close to 5,000 people.

The contribution will be applied to a project in Port de Paix, Haiti.  Buckley and the Rev. Bill Deneke, rector, are visiting there this month to observe the wells under construction.  The parish has raised enough money for more than five wells.
