Fire in Rio diocese is crisis for poor ![]()
Our companion diocese of Rio de Janeiro has written asking for help following a fire Aug. 14 in tge Rio das Pedras shantytown. The fire left 800 homes gutted and 3,000 people homeless, said Bishop Celso Franco de Oliveira, pictured here in the rubble. Fortunately no one was killed.
"At this time we are appealing for food and clothing as well as financial contributions for this purpose," he said. "Services are being performed daily and prayers offered in our Church of St. Peter, which is located in the midst of this community."
We will be providing more information about ways to help. Please keep these people in your prayers.

Unlike the famine of India and parts of Africa, Brazil’s famine is not related to food shortage. Brazil is a major food producer and exporter. A fourth of the population suffers from hunger because the poor cannot afford to buy the food that is stocked on supermarket shelves. In fact, rural hunger in Brazil is decreasing while urban hunger is increasing. Fifty percent of Brazil’s hunger is located in small to medium size cities and another 30 percent is located in northeastern Brazil, a region known for devastating drought. As the poor migrate from rural areas to urban areas, many relocate to smaller cities that are not as economically vibrant as Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo. These smaller cities lack the jobs to support the poor. (more ) |
