Bishop's Pilgrimage - 2007
"The Road to Canterbury", August 20-31, 2007
Led by The Rt. Rev. J. Neil Alexander, Bishop of Atlanta
Canterbury Cathedral
The Chapter House, Salisbury Cathedral
Canterbury Cathedral
"The Cathedral's history goes back to 597AD when St Augustine, sent by Pope Gregory the Great as a missionary, established his seat (or 'Cathedra') in Canterbury. In 1170 Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in the Cathedral and ever since, the Cathedral has attracted thousands of pilgrims, as told famously in Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales."
The third Bishop's Pilgrimage for people of the Diocese of Atlanta, will take our pilgrims through some of the many beautiful Cathedrals of England, leadimg up to our final destination; the Canterbury Cathedral, Mother Church of the Anglican Communion and seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury. After arriving in London, we will begin the pilgrimage in "the lovely city of Oxford" and the Oxford Cathedral. After that we will continue our journey through the many Cathedrals of Wales. Gloucesterr, Bath, Salisbury, Rochester, and Winchester including many other historic places along the way. An example:
The spacious Chapter House which contains a 13th century frieze depicting scenes from the Old Testament and the cloisters which are the largest in England. Here you can also see one of the four original copies of the Magna Carta which was sent here in the 13th century for safekeeping.Talks by Bishop Alexander about the history and importance of many of these sites will help us understand the heritage of the Anglican church and its present day legacy on the Episcopal church.

Due to the current Israel-Hezbolah conflict, a pilgrimage to Israel during Advent has been postponed until March 1-11. Gray and Jean Temple and Mary and Bob Trogdon are offering the opportunity to members of the Diocese of Atlanta, their friends, and others interested in a Christian journey.
"We will be escorted by Doron Heiliger, one of the most respected guides in Israel," said the Rev. Gray Temple, retired priest of the diocese. "An ex-officer in Israeli intelligence (and in daily touch with that office), Doron nevertheless presents an extremely sympathetic view of the Palestinians."
Several preliminary meetings are planned to organize and go over practical, historical, geographic and spiritual details, Temple said.
The fare will be $2,800 per person based on 30 people. There will be a single supplement of $390. This includes airfare, hotels, two meals a day, planned site entrance fees, guide fees and tips.
Interested parties may register by contacting Temple at grayt1@mindspring.com or theTrogdons at marytrogdon@earthlink.net.
