Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking Commission
Mark your Calendars for SOAP UP Atlanta! On Saturday, January 26, 2019, from 9:30am-3:30pm, the Commission invites representatives from all 114 worshiping communities in the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta to participate in SOAP UP Atlanta, an educational and interactive service event. We will learn from the founder of S.O.A.P., Theresa Flores, who will share her personal experience of being trafficked at age 15. And we will prepare to distribute the soap we label (with the National Trafficking Hotline) to the hotels surrounding the Mercedes Benz stadium. We will do this work just before Super Bowl 2019 is hosted in Atlanta; sex trafficking is known to increase around such large events. SOAP UP Atlanta event will be held at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 634 W. Peachtree Street, NW, Atlanta, GA 30308 (at the North Ave MARTA station).
The Commission on Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking (DMST) met with rousing support from the Atlanta Diocese Annual Council on November 9, 2018. Bishop Robert Wright gave an impromptu endorsement after our announcement asking everyone to “get behind this effort”. Come and be trained on DMST, wrap soap with the national hotline number and deliver soap and educational material to the hotels around the Mercedes Benz Stadium in the afternoon. One bar of soap could save a life.
Over 7200 men a month in Georgia purchase under aged sex and that number increases during large
Survivor: “Silence rings in the ear of every victim with piercing familiarity”.
Help us break the silence. We need 2-3 volunteers from each Parish to deliver 40,000 little bars of soap with the national hotline on the label to be placed in strategic locations within the hotels. 200 volunteers will gather in the morning, receive training and deliver soap and Missing Children’s Posters in the afternoon to the hotels. 36 missing children were recovered within a week of last year’s Super Bowl in Houston, Texas.
