Christmas Eve

Dec 24, 2019

“The Glories of His Righteousness and Wonders of His Love….”

Again and again this season, in images and songs, we are charmed by the thought of a dutiful husband, a bold teenage girl and a helpless child as the delivery system for God’s love and power in the real world. Practically, though, if we’re not careful, we’ll imagine that we are the Christmas tree and Jesus is only an ornament.

The gift of Christmas is that we are invited again to think better and to live truer. God in the form of Jesus is the Christmas tree planted in our midst as a sapling. Once a sapling but now the tallest and strongest tree. And we are like sparkling ornaments and flickering lights resting on its branches. The highest and best purpose of our lives is to adorn what God has promised and accomplished. What God has accomplished is to draw near; to accompany us in our joys and sorrows; to call us out beyond ourselves and to give us a durable and generative hope.

With these extraordinary gifts given to us, gifts far beyond our deserving, we are left to wonder this season, maybe more than any other season, what example of God’s love and power is God longing to release through me?

Merry Christmas!

¡Feliz Navidad!
